Five things every Communications Director should prioritize

  1. Holistic problem-solving. Champion the organizational mission, vision and values over any individual department, leader or project.
  2. People skills. Develop and manage talent by building teams with paid (and unpaid) staff.
  3. Flow. Remember every piece of communication is a vehicle, not a destination. If it’s not moving people through a process to a simple and clear next step, it’s a dead end.
  4. Significant projects. Manage the majors to facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and interdependencies. Stand-alone projects don’t deserve the same attention.
  5. Learn new things. Read, visit and experience things outside your wheelhouse and comfort zone. Increase your capacity to find best practices in a variety of channels (e.g., leadership, technology, marketing, etc.) and apply what makes sense in your setting.
